Grand Rapids, Michigan: Minimalist Modern Wedding Inspiration | Featured on 100 Layer Cake

Clean, geometrical, pops of color and black slate metallic accents, pulled together in a refined display. This is what we dreamt of for this modern minimalist wedding. The vision of the shoot was executed by Alyssa Ferguson of Fleurology Designs with help from the talented Tifani Lyn. Knowing right away that I wanted to use all local creatives and vendors was at the heart of our collaboration. Loving the boldness of the vision of this shoot, I eagerly was ecstatic over the course of the coordination process for such a modern unique affair.

Capturing an air of sophistication without striking guests as being ostentatious requires an attentive selection of pieces and a subtle yet complex design style. For the ceremony, modern ghost chairs provided by The Rental Co and a $20 white craft paper from Amazon with hand drawn grid lines by our talented photographer Tifani, serve as the backdrop for the union of the stunning bride and groom. Afterwards a bride could easily create a lasting memory of the moment by framing some of the backdrop for display in her home while also simply recycling the rest.

Grand Rapids, MI Bride and Groom Portraits

Invitations being the first introduction to this minimalist wedding theme, were created by Centennial Avenue. With black and white bold lines creating the geometrical modern minimalist theme with an outline of green botanical foliage for the pop of fun color.

Makeup Artist Erick Gerson RS created a look that was classic and effortless. He started by highlighting and contouring to add subtle definition to her face, then used neutral colors on the eyes to blend and soften. Natural customized eyelashes were added to enhance her eyes to get a bigger and fuller lash illusion. Lips were bold and matched the brightness and hue of the bridal bouquet. Rose water was sprayed to add hydration to give a flawless and natural dewy finish.

Grand Rapids, MI Beautiful Bridal Portrait

Tablescape starts with the base of the table that features a white pin tuck linen provided by Special Occasions West and ghost chairs provided by The Rental Co. The tables were set with square charger plates and crystal wine glasses, also from The Rental Co. For a more relaxed setting we tied geometric black escort cards hand cut and lettered by Lief Designs onto our sleek black slate flatware from West Elm. The focal centerpiece featured coral charm peonies, red ranunculus, juliet garden roses, mini green hydrangea, orange spray roses, olive branches, freshly picked cedar and eucalyptus designed within a concrete DIY vase created by Fleurology Designs. Accenting the table were gold West Elm terrariums and white glass geometrical orbs filled containing curling air plants and a pair of black slate candle holders with white taper candles.

The bride’s hair was meticulously designed by Mani Aghababian. She created texture and wave to the bride’s hair by spraying 1.5 inch subsections with Aveda’s Air Control hairspray then wrapping the sections around a tapered styling wand. Hair was then parted, fastened with a ponytail with a bungee the wrapped her pony with pieces that were parted and left out in front, then securing them with bobby pins.

Wearing a stunning newly arrived for the season, Mikaella Bridal gown that was provided by Renee Austin Wedding. The bride captured the attention and hearts of everyone in the room with her effortless sophistication and simple elegance of this masterpiece of a dress.

Accenting the dress were a pair of sleek slate “Skinny dip earrings”, a glamorous “Quartz + Garnet Ring” that made quite the statement, and a “Geometric Solitaire + Sapphire Halo wedding band” which were all perfectly created locally and sustainably by a Grand Rapids based jewelry artisan, The Story of Two.

What modern affair wouldn’t be such without a sleek black tux for the groom to wear. The ensemble, a slim fit peak and modern fit pants by Perry Ellis with a fitted white shirt and slim black tie by Formal Shirts and black matte dress shoes by Frederico Leone, was provided by Dunhill Tuxedos. The groom’s wedding band, the “Drifting feather + taper wedding band” was also created by The Story of Two.

Our adorable and delicious 2 tier cake baked by Ginger Bakes has a top tier featuring her white chocolate cake with raspberry cream cheese filling and the bottom tier has a double fudge cake with peanut butter filling, yummy! Flowers adorning the cake are from Fleurology Designs. The sharp black unique stand that highlighted the cake was from The Rental Co. The heart endearing banner behind the cake quoted a verse from Beatles love song “Because” and was hand cut and lettered by Lief Designs. “Love is old, love is new. Love is all, love is you.”

Whatever your style or look is, say it with meaning, heart and purpose. Express what you love, who you are as a bride and as a newly to be wed couple in your wedding inspiration, theme and decor. Hope you loved this shoot as much as we did!
